PACE & SPACE
Common for the NBA, pace and space teams focus on creating driving lane opportunities, with shooters in catch and shoot positions. Downhills and corner 3s are common. The pace stays high and shots go up off drive & kicks. Think Houston Rockets.
RUN & GUN
These teams are reminiscent of the late 2000's Phoenix Suns teams. They push the ball up the floor quickly and attack transitions and quick hitters early. Think Steve Nash & Amare Stoudamire.
4 OUT 1 IN
Very common in the modern basketball game, power forwards have evoled into stretch forwards. Keeping spacing and having shooting threats at all angles is vital to this kind of team.
GRIT & GRIND
A staple of 90s teams, and early 2000's Memphis Grizzlies. These teams are physical, defensive, with lock down defenders, and an inside presence in the paint. Often will play with two bigs in the front court who play inside.
CONTROLLED & EFFICIENT
For teams with a High IQ point guard, being controlled and letting him keep others efficient sets up this kind of slower paced, smart team. Rajon Rondo, or a Chris Paul for example would thrive getting others involved in this kind of team.
ATHLETISISM & LANES
NBA athleteisim is off the charts. So most teams have displays of this style from time to time. These athletic teams likes to use athletes in all 5 positions, where switching is prevalent, and position less offenses are common.
ACTIVE MISDIRECTION
Very much a EuroLeague forte, misdirection teams are actively back screening, and moving for each other. Creating havoc from all the movement, a defender is bound to get lost at some point.
PICK & ROLL BASED
Think Stockton & Malone. Teams based on high volume with Pick & Rolls, counters, and a solid point guard/big combo.
CONTINUITY BALLSCREEN
Again, another common style used in Europe, continuity ball screen teams keep the flow from side to side. These teams have good spacing but are not stagnant. They keep moving.
THE FACILITATOR
When you have a player like Nikola Jokic, you have to let him quarterback you throughout the game. These kinds of teams use the talent they have in a passing bigman, to set up active off ball players and scorers. High Post actions are common.
SHOOTER BASED
When you have guys like Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, you have to get them looks. Teams will top lock and deny heavy, so these shooter based teams are creative and active. Pindowns, Floppy's and Pick the Pickers are prevalent in shooter based teams.
8 SECOND RULE
A new philosophy still not applied much, but with some teams testing it. These teams attempt to get a shot up within the first 8 seconds of the shot clock. On resets and offensive rebounds, same 8 seconds applies. More shots at goal is the goal.
